A Masterpiece in Neo-Georgian Style

Sion Hill Hall was designed in 1912 by the renowned York Architect Walter H. Brierley 'the Lutyens of the North'.

With its fine lines, unique character and well planned layout, the house was described by the Royal Institute of British Architects as being of 'Outstanding Architectural Merit' and one of the best country houses to be constructed before the Great War. The House contains the H.W. Mawer collection of fine antique furniture, porcelain, paintings and clocks all in superb room settings. The Hall stands in its own grounds with lawns and level gravel paths.

Herbert W. Mawer, a successful businessman, purchased the estate in 1962 and lived here with his ever growing and lovingly cared for collection of antiques and works of art. This delightful collection was amassed over a lifetime from the great post war country house sales of the North and includes fine furniture, porcelain, paintings and clocks from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Prior to his death in 1982 he had the foresight to establish a charitable trust to maintain the house and contents. The tradition of collecting continues with new acquisitions made regularly by Michael Mallaby who now resides here.

Dining Room

Situated in beautiful countryside, and surrounded by its own charming grounds, a visit to Sion Hill promises an intimate feeling of a lived-in house which has been restored and decorated in a style that recalls the graceful Edwardian era but with a view to comfortable modern life.
